Beneath the Cross

In honor of the Easter season, I thought I would share the words to one of my "new" favorite hymns. This is not a new song by any means, it has been around for years. However, I have never heard it sung in church. I wonder how some music has been overlooked while we sing the same things over and over and over...Anyway, about a year ago I was listening to a choral CD and discovered this wonderful song written by Elizabeth Clephane. The third verse is my favorite.

Beneath the Cross of Jesus
Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way
From the burning of the noontide heat and the burden of the day.

Upon the cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of one who suffered there for me;
And from my smitten heart with tears, two wonders I confess;
The wonders of his glorious love and my unworthiness.

I take, O Cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.

It's when I look to the cross that I am most aware of unworthiness. It's a truth so amazing an unfathomable that He went to the cross. This Easter season it's becoming more real to me!

Thanks for sharing - that song is a new one for me too:)

Of course I meant MY unworthiness. You knew that, right?
